Spread Betting Trading Centre: Could you give us a little history about the company?
Capital Spreads: Capital Spreads was set up in Oct 2003 as a small SB company in competition with IG, City, Cantors, et al. We competed on price (spreads) and security (no credit and stops against all open positions) and simplicity (our trading platform and navigation are obvious and easy to understand). In December 2005 the company was floated on Aim and is now the only quoted SB company along with IG.
Spread Betting Trading Centre: Does your company offer any services in addition to spread betting?
Capital Spreads: We have a small boutique broking unit and an institutional and retail FX unit.
Spread Betting Trading Centre: Do you personally spread bet? If so, how long have you been doing it?
Capital Spreads: Sometimes, but I am not very good at it. I started 7/8 years ago but now restrict myself to 1 or 2 pound bets for interests sake.
Spread Betting Trading Centre: What attributes do you think make for a good spread better?
Capital Spreads: Discipline is the most important quality you can have when spread betting.
Spread Betting Trading Centre: What do you think is the principal reason your customers spread bet - e.g. hedging short-term deals, capital gain, etc.?
Capital Spreads: Spread betting gives customers the ability to do something different, the ability to trade in markets that you only ever read about in the papers.
Spread Betting Trading Centre: How does your company compute the spread?
Capital Spreads: Depends on the product. FTSE 100 stock we quote the rolling bet as 0.05% above and below the ‘real’ market price. Quarterly markets include cost of carry and dividend components. Most other markets are just quoted on a fixed spread around the mid point of the underlying bid/offer price in the real market.
