CMC Markets Interview
Spread Betting Trading Centre: Could you give us a little history about the company?
CMC Markets: Established here in the UK in 1989, CMC –the ‘Currency Management Corporation’ was founded as an FX Marketmaker by Peter Cruddas. Since then, CMC has evolved into CMC Markets and now specialises in offering Financial Spread Betting, CFD Trading and Foreign Exchange globally. We now have offices in Europe, Asia, the US and Australasia and provide trading services to clients in over 100 countries.
Spread Betting Trading Centre: Does your company offer any services in addition to spread betting?
CMC Markets: Yes, we also offer CFD and FX trading which has seen massive growth internationally in the last couple of years, and we have an Education Department which runs courses on a number of topics including Technical Analysis, Understanding Financial Markets and Foreign Exchange.
Spread Betting Trading Centre: What attributes do you think make for a good spread better?
CMC Markets: I think it’s the same as for any form of financial trading or investing: Discipline, patience, a healthy appreciation of risk and how to manage it – and to view it as a long-term business rather than a short-term get rich quick punt.
Spread Betting Trading Centre: What do you think is the principal reason your customers spread bet - e.g. hedging short-term deals, capital gain, etc.?
CMC Markets: Our customers spread bet for many reasons. We do have customers that use spread betting to hedge their portfolio but largely, clients typically use it for a short- to medium-term investment. These range from full time traders who make a living from spread betting to those who enjoy it as a hobby. The great thing about spread betting is that low stake sizes and dealing costs have made financial markets accessible to everybody. Our clients include teachers, builders, IT professionals, policemen and City workers.
